Stimulating Sales

Redux Beverages in Las Vegas (surprise) have released a new energy drink ‘ingeniously’ entitled ‘Cocaine’.

The drink apparently gives a high to the consumer (it has 350% more caffine than Red Bull) and also contains a ‘secret ingredient’ that gives a throat numbing effect “to emulate its namesake”.

Pitched as the “legal alternative”, the brand creator, James Kirby claims the launch has been a phenomenal success, with the brand having particular appeal amongst high school kids (well done).

The amount of global PR this launch has generated is nothing short of incredible, provoking interest and anger in equal doses.

At the risk of sounding a bit square, I have to say, I think this is pretty irresponsible stuff – but I know others will disagree, arguing ‘it’s only a name’.

Is this a stroke of marketing genius, or an offensive shock exercise? Are the two even mutally exclusive? I can see this one rumbling on…
