The Future of the Web

A Pew Internet / American Life survey published this weekend shows what 742 “experts in the fields of computing, politics and business” predict will happen with the web by 2020.

It makes for an interesting read. Some of my personal favourite snippets:

  • 58% of respondants thought a ‘counter-culture’ of Luddites would develop, with some resorting to violent protest at technological dominance
  • 42% thought ‘autonomous technology’ would become a problem (someone call Neo)
  • One of the respondents postulating that: “an entire generation (would opt-out) of the real world (leading to) a paradoxical decrease in productivity as the people who provide the motive economic power no longer are in touch with the realities of the real world”.
